Ingredients

- 1 pastry for double-crust pie
- 2 cups flour, sifted
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 1 cup light molasses or 1 cup cane syrup
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup hot water
Recipe
- 1 line 2 (8") pie pans with pastry; flute edges.
- 2 combine flour, sugar, 1/2 teaspoons baking soda and shortening; mix to make crumbs.
- 3 divide crumbs evenly between 2 pastry-lined pie pans and spread in smooth layers.
- 4 combine molasses, 1 teaspoons baking soda and hot water.
- 5 pour over crumbs in pie pans.
- 6 bake at 375 f for 40 minutes.
